    Record-setting 71-pound fish caught in Lady Bird Lake

    AUSTIN (KXAN) — There’s a new big fish record in Lady Bird Lake.

    A 71-pound smallmouth buffalo was caught in the Austin lake, setting the state record, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said on social media .

    Austin Anderson caught the fish on June 10 with a rod and reel, the department said. The 44.5-inch fish was released back into Lady Bird Lake.

    In 2022, a 64-pound smallmouth buffalo was caught in Lady Bird Lake. This catch set a previous record.

    The most common fish species in Lady Bird Lake include largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish and common carp, according to TPWD .

    TPWD said the 71-pound catch earned Anderson several awards including the big fish award, water body record, water body catch-and-release record and a state catch-and-release record.
