Permit requests detail where else ‘1923’ TV show could film in Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Those traveling in the West Campus neighborhood near the University of Texas at Austin this week likely noticed an increase in traffic and road closures due to filming for the TV show “1923.”

KXAN reported Wednesday there were active street closures near San Gabriel Street for filming of the Golden Globe-nominated show, which stars Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford and Brandon Sklenar. The series is working on the second season of the show, renewed in February 2023.

KXAN searched through city of Austin permitting records and found the city approved and issued a permit Sept. 9, which will remain active until Sept. 16. Permit details revealed filming would run from 5 a.m. Tuesday morning through 10 p.m. Thursday evening, with production expected to wrap in the area between Thursday and Saturday.

That approved permit led to full road and sidewalk closures along San Gabriel Street between West 23rd and West 24th streets.

A separately approved permit issued Sept. 6 and poised to expire Saturday authorized production parking in the 900 block of West 22 1/2 Street, with all 32 spaces available for crew’s use. Another parking permit active through Saturday also allocated parking and production setup space to crew members, with the north and south corners in the 900 block of West 23rd Street available along with portions of the 2200-2304 block of San Gabriel Street.

City documents noted another permit request is yet to be authorized due to an incomplete application. That request teed up a possible Sept. 18 filming start date inside 708 San Antonio Street.

If approved, that batch of filming is said to wrap between Sept. 19-20. It would include lane closures in the 700 block of San Antonio Street and the 400 block of West Eighth Street, along with several sidewalk closures and parking allocations for crew members. Earlier this year, the Austin Business Journal reported Austin would serve as a base for filming “1923,” with the project expected to generate roughly $52 million into the city’s economy and lead to 200 direct and more than 150 indirect jobs.

In addition to Austin, “1923” has also filmed in downtown Lockhart ahead of the upcoming season. That filming focused on some of the historic buildings in Lockhart’s main stretch, designed to serve as a backdrop.
