AUSTIN (KXAN) — A weapon was seized from a student prior to entering Del Valle High School, DVHS Principal Kandice Smith said in a letter to parents Tuesday. That weapon was not used, the letter said.

The letter from Smith said a student reported the weapon to a high school staff member, and the district police department is investigating.

“I want to thank the student who reported this for doing the right thing,” Smith said in the letter.

The letter said this is a reminder to parents and their students that items considered weapons are “strictly prohibited and cannot be brought to school by parents or students at any time.”

The DVISD Student Code of Conduct addresses the “disciplinary and legal consequences” that could result from any “item that could be considered a weapon or even toy look-alike weapon.”

Smith said parents and students can report information for any incident affecting the campus online using the QuickTip website .
