AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Travis County Attorney’s Office has a warning for county residents – beware of phone calls claiming to be TCAO and demanding money to remove warrants.

The TCAO said it recently received reports from residents who have received such scam calls. According to TCAO, the scammer will claim there is a “warrant or criminal charge” against the victim, then demand money from them to remove it.

The caller will then either send the victim a QR code to pay at, or will tell the victim to find an “official government pay station.” TCAO described that “station” as an “ATM-like” machine at a gas station.

“If you receive a suspicious phone call from someone claiming to be with the Travis County Attorney’s office demanding payment, do not hesitate to contact the office at (512) 854-9415 to verify the validity of that call before giving anyone money,” said the TCAO in a press release.

The TCAO said they do not contact anyone in this form, they encourage anyone who receives this call to report it to the Travis County non-emergency line .
