Ponderosa Pet Resort fire victims settle for $75K

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Thirteen Georgetown families who lost their pets in the Ponderosa Pet Resort fire just over three years ago have settled their claims after suing the company that ran the kennel and its owner.

Attorney Ard Ardalan said in the release the parties agreed to a $75,000 settlement. That is the largest known settlement for a case of this kind, the release said.

On Sept. 18, 2021, 75 dogs were killed after a fire broke out at the pet resort around 10:40 p.m. The fire was caused by “an electrical malfunction,” according to a news release from Ardalan Injury Law.

KXAN reported in 2021 that pet owners claimed they were deceived by the kennel company and the owner, saying the company “made promises about 24-hour surveillance and security systems that would keep the animals safe at night.”

The release also said there were no working smoke or fire alarms at the time of the fire. Although there was a fire alarm system installed, the release said it was disconnected by the owner before the fire.

“The fire quickly spread throughout the building, burning through exposed and flammable spray foam insulation,” the release said.

Ardalan is now pushing Texas lawmakers to pass a bill during the next legislative sessions aimed at creating more protections for animals at pet care facilities.

“This deterrent would help protect Texas pets by making those in the pet care industry think twice before cutting corners or putting profits ahead of pets,” Ardalan said in the release.
