Which Texas roads have the most traffic fatalities?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — For more than two decades , there’s been at least one death reported every day on a roadway in Texas. An October analysis from Florida-based law firm Amanda Demanda Injury Lawyers — which operates a Houston office — outlined which Texas roads account for the most crashes and traffic-related fatalities.

The report analyzed crash data from 2018 to 2022 and determined Interstate 10 had the most fatalities during the five-year timespan, with 667 deaths reported. More than 600 total crashes happened on the interstate during the same time period, per the report.

I-35 came in second, with 643 fatalities reported as part of 591 total crashes. Rounding out the top three was I-20, with 588 traffic fatalities and 524 crashes documented.

2. I-35: 643 fatalities
3. I-20: 588 fatalities
4. I-45: 473 fatalities
5. I-30: 287 fatalities
6. U.S. 59: 255 fatalities
7. U.S. 287: 190 fatalities
8. U.S. 90: 188 fatalities
9. State Highway 6: 166 fatalities
10. U.S 281: 154 fatalities

I-10 claimed the top spot, unsurprising given the sheer size of the roadway. The interstate runs 879 miles long across the state, more than 200 miles longer than the second-longest roadway landing in the Top 10 (U.S. 287, with 659 road miles).

With Texas home to both a substantially growing population — and traffic volume — as well as the highest speed limit postings in the U.S., the report noted that combination resulted in the state’s heightened crash and fatality rates.

When broken down by city, Houston claimed the top spot, with 1,393 fatalities and 1,326 crashes reported between 2018 and 2022. Dallas came in second with 1,059 fatalities and 982 crashes, while San Antonio landed third with its 860 fatalities and 817 total crashes.

Locally, Austin ranked No. 5 among the deadliest cities for traffic fatalities, with 494 fatalities and 469 crashes reported in the Texas capital. The Top 10 city breakdown is as follows:

3. San Antonio: 860 fatalities, 817 crashes
4. Fort Worth: 560 fatalities, 518 crashes

7. Lubbock: 172 fatalities, 161 crashes
8. Corpus Christi: 169 fatalities, 160 crashes
9. Arlington: 168 fatalities, 162 crashes
10. Beaumont: 108 fatalities, 100 crashes
