AUSTIN (KXAN) — A suspect was arrested in connection to “an act of racial bias” reported at Texas State University in September, Chief Matthew Carmichael with the TXST University Police Department said in an email shared to the university’s website .

The report of the “racial bias” happened on Sept. 28. University President Kelly Damphousse said on Oct. 4 in an email shared to the university’s website there was a “racial slur keyed into a student’s car.”

The suspect, who was not identified Monday, was charged with criminal mischief, which is a state jail felony, Carmichael said. A Title IX investigation is ongoing with the university, so university police said they cannot share additional details.

“This hateful act is deeply disturbing to me because it runs counter to what I know to be TXST’s core values. Our campus leaders, faculty, staff, and I remain committed to ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of every member of our university community,” Damphouse wrote on the campus website Oct. 4 .
