AUSTIN (KXAN) — Sherles Gregorio Machado-Hernandez, 31, is in the Travis County Jail on a capital murder charge in Monday morning’s homicide in southeast Austin.

During a news conference Tuesday, police said one of the victims is Francis Kaina Anseume Corredor, 27, who Machado-Hernandez was in a common law marriage with.

“We have a coward who killed the mother of his children and left three children motherless,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said. “Family violence is something that touches every part of this police department from homicide down to our patrol officer.”

The other victim was Bryan Florentino Flores Alvarez, 19. Investigators said he and Anseume had a dating relationship.

An Amber Alert was issued in connection with this case around 4 p.m. Monday. Machado-Hernandez was listed as the suspect, and the missing children were ages 10, 4 and 2. Police said Tuesday, two of the children were his and Anseume’s. The children were eventually found safe.

    Double homicide on Burton Drive

Around 7:30 Monday morning, police were called to an apartment complex on Burton Drive in the Riverside neighborhood, where they found Anseume and Flores dead inside a vehicle with apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators said surveillance video shows Machado-Hernandez pull up behind that car in the early morning hours. Police are still trying to determine how he knew Ansueme was there. Flores lived at the apartment complex, police said.

    The Amber Alert

During Tuesday’s news conference, Detective Randy DeLuna said the department worked with state partners to issue the Amber Alert when police discovered the three children were unaccounted for.

About an hour after it was issued, other family members, who were with the children at the time, called police to tell them they had the three kids and that they were safe.

“Within an hour of the Amber Alert going out, family with whom the children were with contacted APD to notify them the children were at 5401 Decker Lane, and were dropped off by Machado, who had then abandoned his silver Mitsubishi,” Detective Adam Curvin said.

DeLuna said the children were unaccounted for from about 3:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and detectives are still working to determine how long Machado-Hernandez was with them. At this point, he does not face charges in connection with the Amber Alert, only the capital murder case.

    The search for the suspect

During the news conference, APD said undercover officers tracked multiple vehicles in search of Machado-Hernandez.

It was determined that one of the vehicles had plates registered to a different car make and color.

“It was believed those license plates were put on that vehicle to obscure its identity and further evade law enforcement,” said Curvin.

Undercover officers followed one car to another apartment complex in the Riverside area, and another one northeast from there.

Investigators believed, given the nature of the situation, a traffic stop would prompt a pursuit, so police waited until multiple backup units were in place before initiating a stop. When they did initiate the stop, the car yielded, and police found Machado-Hernandez “hiding” in the back seat.

Police said his brother was driving the vehicle and was taken into custody, but does not face any charges at this time.

Suspect had open case with CPS

Child Protective Services told APD homicide detectives the agency had an open case regarding Machado-Hernandez and one of the children in the Amber Alert, and a forensic interview was scheduled for Tuesday.

Police discovered Machado-Hernandez took the kids from their current schools and provided a new address in Niederwald, which is east of Kyle, on Friday, Oct. 11. According to records, APD said the suspect, Anseume and the three children all lived at that address.

Child Protective Services is currently working to place the two children that Machado-Hernandez and Ansueme had together, according to APD.

The department did not elaborate on the status of Anseume’s third child.
