    APD: Bicyclist dies after southeast Austin crash, man charged with DWI

    AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was charged with driving while intoxicated after police said he crashed with a bicyclist in southeast Austin on Sept. 20 . The bicyclist later died in the hospital, according to police.

    The Austin Police Department on Tuesday identified the driver as Abel Martinez, 26. Jail records show he was booked into and released from the Travis County Jail the same day as the crash.

    The crash happened at 8:32 p.m. in the 6000 block of East Stassney Lane.

    APD said officers responded to a crash between a car and a bike. The bicyclist, who police have not identified yet, was taken to the hospital where he died nearly three weeks later on Oct. 10.

    Police said the investigation is still pending, and fatality information could change. Anyone with information can call APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111.

    APD said this crash is being investigated as Austin’s 69th deadly crash of the year , resulting in 74 deaths total. On the date of this crash in 2023, there were 70 deadly crashes, resulting in 73 deaths.
