Bat in San Marcos tests positive for rabies after flying into person’s hair

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A bat was collected and tested positive for rabies after it flew into a person’s hair in a residential San Marcos neighborhood Monday evening.

The city of San Marcos said the incident occurred near the 1900 block of Gibraltar Drive.

According to the city, the bat was sent to the Department of State Health Services laboratory in Austin for rabies testing — a requirement after direct human contact that might result in exposure to rabies.

Following the bat’s positive result for the virus, the person exposed was notified and sought post-exposure treatment to prevent rabies, according to the city.

“Rabies is a deadly virus that can infect mammals, including wildlife, pets and humans,” the city said. “The virus is spread through contact with an infected mammal’s saliva and is fatal if not treated before symptoms occur. Post-exposure treatment for rabies that is provided soon after a bite or exposure is effective in preventing the virus from spreading.”

The city said any contact with a bat should be immediately reported to Animal Protection at 512-805-2655. Bats found on the ground or in a residence should also be reported.

The city also reminded residents to not touch any bats they encounter and encouraged them to take preventative steps to lower the risk of exposure to rabies, including by vaccinating pets .
