New program offers high school students college credit option

    2024-05-11

SPOKANE, Wash. — A new program allowing high school students to earn college credits will be available in the fall.

Starting next school year, University High School freshman can enroll in a new cohort, allowing them to take college classes during high school hours. And by graduation, the student would have earned an Associate of Arts degree.

"I considered running start in my sophomore year, but I had a really bad fear of driving. So I didn't have that opportunity because I was so terrified of driving that I couldn't make my way to, you know, the colleges," said Sophia Eden, University High School junior.

A partnership between Eastern Washington University and Spokane Community College has made this possible.

"We map that course that's a university high school class to the correct Eastern Washington College in the high school course that has a distinct name," said Dr. John Parker, Superintendent, CVSD

Student enrollment for the program is starting for current eight graders heading to University High School.

The district is hoping to expand to Ridgeline and Central Valley High Schools.

"You only get high school once, and so having the opportunity to further your potential career would just be beneficial," said Braden Roland, University High School senior
