Spokane language immersion school considering new name, adorable mascot

SPOKANE, Wash. - Big changes are coming to Spokane's Spanish Language Immersion school - and those changes include an adorable new mascot.

At Tuesday's school board meeting, the board will consider three possible name changes for the school.

The first is Ruben Trejo Dual Language Academy, named for a nationally known sculptor and artist who taught at Eastern Washington University for 30 years.

The board could also consider Spokane Dual Language Academy or Spokane Dual Language School.

Trustees will also consider the school's new mascot: the axolotl. Axolotls are a type of salamander that spend their whole lives underwater. The renaming committee said it has been an important symbol of Mexican culture.

It's also endangered, and the nominators said it would be a good way for students to learn about this unique species.

The language immersion school is a public school with nearly 300 students enrolled.

Due to the school's growth, the immersion school will move out of its current location at the Libby Center into a new home at Pratt Elementary School for the upcoming school year. Classes will start after Labor Day.
