Young soccer players line field before Zephyr home opener

SPOKANE, Wash. - A moment many have been waiting for; Spokane Zephyr kicked off its inaugural game Saturday.

The match is the first professional women's sports game to ever be hosted in Spokane.

"I want to be a Zephyr player when I grow up," Charlotte Sherwood said as she lined the field ahead of the first game.

The Spokane Zephyr is already giving young athletes like Charlotte and her sister Hollyn new female role models to look up to.

The pair were some of nearly 400 young players lining the field moments before the home opener kick off game.

"I feel very lucky I get to do the same thing with the Zephyr players," Hollyn said.

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown has officially named August 17 Women's Soccer Day.

The Spokane Zephyr are the only West Coast team in the USL Super League, a new women's pro soccer league kicking off its first season this weekend.

Having a professional team in the city means a lot for young athletes like Hope Oster, who was also out on the field Saturday.

"It is really cool to see them and look up to them," Oster said.

The Zephyr team has many more games coming up in the fall season. You can buy tickets to games on the Spokane Zephyr website.
