Lightning strikes cause two wildfires in Stevens County overnight

STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. -- Fire crews responded to two wildfires caused by lightning strikes in Stevens County early Sunday morning.

According to Stevens County Fire District 1, firefighters responded to the two fires around 12:30 a.m. on August 18.

When crews arrived at the Deer Lake Fire they found a small, quarter-mile fire burning on Deer Mountain below the antenna site.

Crews completely lined the fire by 3 a.m. and began mop-up around 6:30 a.m.

No people or fires were harmed or threatened by the fire.

When crews arrived at the Scotts Valley Fire, they found a small, half-acre fire burning off Scotts Valley Road, about a half-mile up a nearby mountain.

Firefighters determined it was unsafe to attack the fire due to its location. As of 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, no people or buildings are in danger and crews said they will continue to monitor the small fire.

SCFD1 said other fires could have been caused by lightning in the area. They are asking the public to remain aware and to alert them to any additional potential fires.
