Rathdrum businesses struggle to stay afloat during construction season

RATHDRUM, Idaho -- Local businesses in Rathdrum are feeling the pressure to make end's meet amidst an ongoing construction project.

The construction along Highway 53 began in March. Since then, businesses in the area have experienced a significant decrease in foot traffic.

"Most people don't want to come to this side of town because you get caught here forever. Plus, you have to try to make your way through the cones and try not to hit the cement," said Sheree Greenfield, Owner of Kelsey's Bar.

The Country Junction, a feed supply store near Gilbert Road and Harvard Road, said they have almost lost half their business.

"We like really rely on our customers that are always here. It's brought us down 40%, and it's been really hard for our customers to get here," said Jennifer Dumas, manager of Country Junction.

A large part of the store's parking lot was also affected and cannot be used during the construction.

Dumas said the decrease in business has been so great that the store, which employs eight people, is considering potential layoffs.

"It's just affected all of us, and the people that work here, we love working here. We're like a family. All of us have been here for years. So, it's scary when you love your job and you're worried that you might get laid off," said Dumas.

The Idaho Department of Transportation said they are working to ensure access to businesses and that the construction is on schedule to be completed by October.
