August snow could be on the way to our highest mountains

SPOKANE, Wash.-- An unusual forecast this weekend may bring a dusting of August snow to a few mountain ranges in the Northwest.

Temperatures in many valleys in the Inland Northwest may not reach 70 degrees on Saturday as a chilly low pressure system moves overhead. Along with dramatically cooler weather, it will be an excellent opportunity for our parched lands to pick up some rain.

Meanwhile up in the mountains, the rain/snow line will drop to between 7,000 and 8,000 feet. That still leaves most of the Inland Northwest out of the snow zone, but a few of the highest peaks in the region will have an opportunity to pick up a dusting of wintry weather Saturday morning.

The North Cascades is most likely to get a little snow along with the big volcanoes. Further east, it will be touch-and-go for the Idaho Selkirks. Other places that could see snow are the Wallowa Mountains in eastern Oregon, Bitterroot Mountains in Montana/Idaho, and several other mountain ranges in Western Montana depending on the track of the low.

If the possibility of seeing snow on those mountain peaks feels too soon, warmer weather looks more likely for Labor Day weekend. This will only be a temporary break from summer.
