Young teens arrested for crashing stolen car on joyride in Spokane

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Two young teens were arrested for driving and crashing a car that they took without permission on Wednesday night, according to Spokane County Sheriff's Office.

Around 11:30 p.m. on August 21, an SCSO deputy noticed a Jeep speeding east on Wellesley Avenue near Crestline Street.

The deputy began to pursue the jeep before it crashed into a utility pole and then a cement wall near Wellesley Avenue and Cook Street.

As the patrol car approached the crash, three young teens, a 14-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, ran out of the car.

SCSO searched for the teens and soon found them hiding in a nearby backyard.

Deputies learned the 14-year-old girl was visiting the 12-year-old girl's house when they decided to take the Jeep, which was being lent to the 12-year-old's mother by a family member.

The 14-year-old girl drove herself and the 12-year-old to a park and picked up the 14-year-old boy.

The 14-year-old boy then took over driving and was the one who crashed into the utility pole.

In the 14-year-old boy's backpack, deputies found a bottle of prescription pills, not prescribed to the boy, nicotine patches, an e-cigarette, a black face mask and a credit card not in the boy's name.

Deputies arrested the 14-year-old boy for reckless driving, driving without a license, hit-and-run, drug-possession and tobacco possession by a minor.

The 14-year-old girl was arrested for taking a car without permission.

Both 14-year-olds were booked into Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center.

The 12-year-old was not charged and was released to her parent.
