Voter data and info: Washington primary by the numbers

OLYMPIA, Wash - Spokane County bucks the statewide trend and more voters mail in their ballots than use the drop boxes. That's just one piece of data gleaned from the Washington Secretary of State's Office on the primary election.

The ballot return statistics include everything from the age of voters to how many ballots were challenged statewide.

Among the interesting tidbits:

• 54.48% of voters statewide use the drop box to send in their ballots compared to 41.29% that mail them in (.23% says "other.)
• In Spokane County, 53.94% send ballots in by mail, compared to 46.06% who use the drop boxes
• Statewide and in Spokane County, most of the ballots came in on August 6, which was the actual day of the primary. In Spokane County, there was also a big spike the day after the election
• The largest percentage of statewide voters were over the age of 65 (32.7%). In Spokane County, voters over 65 made up the largest group as well, at 68.8% of ballots returned
• Statewide, 6,973 ballots were challenged. Most of them were because signatures didn't match the signature on file. Grant County had the largest number of challenged ballots, but it was still just 1.33% of the ballots that were returned

Overall voter turnout for the primary was just over 41% statewide. That's compared to more than 55% in the primary in 2020.
