Disabled veteran finds new roots in Spokane with help from generous volunteers

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Veterans, neighbors and community members woke up bright and early Saturday ready to work and make the outside of Army Colonel Danny Dudek's home look just as good and special as the inside.

"They are helping put in the roots for me," Danny said.

The event was organized by the national non-profit Homes for Our Troops, which works to give homes to disabled veterans.

For Danny, this means being able to finally feel comfortable moving around his house. The house will have 40 adaptations that include lower countertops and roll under sinks.

"It means the world to have people that I really care about showing that they care about Megan and me," he said.

Danny's home is one of the 68 HFOT is currently in the process of building.

He suffered a spinal cord injury while serving in Iraq that causes him to now spend 90% of his time in a wheelchair. For him, a home like this is lifechanging.

"It's going to get me live in my home a lot longer than I would as I get older" he said.

Tom and Linda Nihoul will be the Danny's new neighbors. They came to the volunteer day event to give a helping hand.

"The least we can do is give back to our veterans," Tom said.

Danny has spent a lot of his life moving around. He is thrilled to settle down at this new home and continue to build his relationship with the Spokane Community.

"It's a place where I feel like I can really put some roots down," he said. "It is a community that is going to help me with all of the things I want to do in life."
