Spokane County completes ballot recount for Commissioner of Public Lands

SPOKANE, Wash. — The ballot recount for the Commissioner of Public Lands race has been completed, according to Spokane County.

Spokane County began counting ballots on Aug. 23 and finished by Aug. 26.

According to the Election Office, they employed 12 teams of two in order to recount the ballots, with a total of 35 employees involved in the process.

The Election Office sorted 144,832 ballots into 1,076 batches, filling 798 storage boxes.

Observers from the two political parties attended more than 80, two-hour sessions to monitor the process.

“The staff performed the recount with skill, dedication, and accuracy,” said Vicky Dalton, Spokane County auditor. “The stamina of the political party observers was admirable. It isn’t easy to sit quietly for two hours, intently watching pieces of paper being moved from one stack to another.”

The final results in Spokane County will be certified and released on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

These results will be reported to the Washington Secretary of State and combined with those from the other 38 counties in the state.

Statewide results will be certified next week.
