    Hand recount determines candidates for Washington Commissioner of Public Lands

    SPOKANE, Wash. -- After a multi-day ballot recount, Washington's Commissioner of Public Lands race was decided on Tuesday.

    A three-day recount determined candidate Dave Upthegrove (D) will advance to the general election to face off against candidate Jaime Herrera Beutler (R).

    Upthegrove secured his spot in the next election with 396,306 votes against candidate Sue Kuehl Pederson, who came in just behind with 396,253 votes.

    The Election Office said it used 12 teams of two to recount over 144,800 ballots.

    The Commissioner of Public Lands is responsible for leading the Department of Natural Resources a making new policies for the agency to follow.
