    Freeman school shooter resentenced Friday

    2024-09-04

SPOKANE, WASH - The teenager who killed one student and injured three others at Freeman High School in 2017 will be resentenced Friday.

Sharpe was a 15-year-old freshman when he brought a gun to Freeman High School. He killed fellow student Sam Strahan and injured three girls who were standing in the hallway.

A judge sentenced Sharpe to at least 40 years in prison, but the appeals court vacated the sentence .

That's because of a state law that says juveniles who commit a crime when they're under the age of 16 can't be required to serve a fixed term of more than 25 years in prison.

Before his previous sentencing in in 2022, the judge allowed victims and families to share what impact the shooting had on them. That led to months of hearings where students and their families testified.

This sentencing will be much shorter because all of those statements are already on the record.

Judge Breean Beggs will preside over the hearing at 2 pm Friday in Spokane County Superior Court.
