Moses Lake School District: Transgender sports policies in Washington 'not working'

    2024-09-04

MOSES LAKE, Wash. -- Current laws governing participation in high school sports by transgender athletes are "not working" for students, according to a draft resolution being discussed by the Moses Lake School Board Thursday.

The school district drafted a resolution similar to one passed by the Eastmont School District in Wenatchee last month.

It takes issue with the current Washington Interscholastic Activities Association policy that students can participate in a sport based on the gender with which they identify.

The district's resolution contends that this is in violation of Title IX, which was created to promote equality and fairness in sports.

The WIAA says its policies are in line with state and federal law and says Title IX specifically protects all students, saying none should be excluded based on sex.

Several districts have taken issue with the policy, especially as transgender athletes winning athletic competitions has drawn attention in recent months.

The school district's resolution says the board of directors "strongly affirms that decision makers and elected officials must act to correct our current situation."

The school board meets at 6:00 Thursday to discuss this and other matters.
