An update on the construction projects impacting Spokane drivers

SPOKANE, WA- Summer is behind us which means Spokane's construction season is nearing its end. However, several projects are still causing slowdowns for drivers navigating the city’s streets.

Ongoing Projects

Washington/Stevens Bridge and Corridor:

• Washington Street is open between North River Drive and Maxwell Avenue
• Grind and overlay work continues on Stevens and Washington Streets between Spokane Falls Boulevard and 3rd Avenue
• Washington-Stevens Bridge is closed
• Detours direct drivers southbound on Washington Street at North River Drive and northbound at Spokane Falls Boulevard.

Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager with The City of Spokane, says a southbound lane is expected to be open next week and the full corridor should be open in about a month or so.

Water Main Transmission Line near Cheney-Spokane Road

• Cheney-Spokane Road open between Latah Bistro and Qualchan Drive, but closed between Qualchan Drive and Cedar Road
• Speed limits on U.S. 195 have been reduced between Hatch Road and Qualchan Drive.

It may seem like there's construction happening on every-other block, and that's because it nearly is. These projects have to happen during the summer in order to account for changing weather conditions.

"The goal is to keep these 2200 lane miles of streets in decent condition, and so we try to maintain them and a lot of people don't remember that we have to do that street maintenance in the summer along with those major projects," said Kirstin Davis.

Completed Projects

This season has seen significant progress, with over 40 projects completed across the city, including improvements to streets, bridges, water systems, sewer lines, and stormwater management. Notable completed projects include:

• 29th Avenue
• Market Street
• North Monroe
• Thor/Freya intersections

Additionally, three water tanks were under construction, marking the largest number in the city’s history. Pedestrian improvements such as crossing beacons on major arterials and enhanced curb ramps, along with various street maintenance efforts like grind and overlays, chip sealing, and crack sealing, have also been successfully completed.

As construction season wraps up, drivers are encouraged to stay alert and plan their routes accordingly.
