Construction in West Spokane may cause delays for SFCC students

SPOKANE, Wash. -- If you're driving through West Spokane over the next few weeks, you might want to give yourself a few extra minutes to account for construction delays.

Construction crews are laying down new asphalt on Whistalks Way from the TJ Meenach Bridge to North Government Way.

Many students at Spokane Falls Community College have been impacted by the road work near campus.

"Orange cones and then, boom! I had to slam on my breaks because everyone in front of me was doing that," said SFCC student, Rob Walsh.

On Monday, Whistalks Way was reduced to one lane in each direction.

"It takes me 58 minutes to get to school every morning, so an hour. And this morning, it took longer than an hour because of the road work," said Walsh.

SFCC said the school is keeping an eye on on the road work to ensure students are set up for success as construction continues.

"We always pay really close attention to construction projects happening around campus, as as of this morning, we haven't noticed any significant delays, either from transit or students taking their personal vehicles," said Patrick Mceachern, Vice President of Student Affairs.

Students who take public transportation to school are also accounting for the delays.

"I'm checking the buses and making sure I know my route and having a backup plan is always good," said Ahnikka Follett who takes the bus to campus.

The construction is set to last through the first two weeks of October.
