Spokane organization brings new approach to raising awareness about domestic violence

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A local organization is bringing a new approach to raising awareness about domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Coalition said they are focused on showing that survivors of domestic violence are more than just a statistic.

Part of that effort includes a new billboard campaign across Spokane.

"Instead of black eyes and bloody noses, when you see something from DVC, you're going to see somebody who is happy and healthy and wanting to participate in life," said Taffy Hunter of SRDVC.

Unlike traditional awareness campaigns, the new billboards show smiling faces, rather than people with injuries, which can be triggering for those suffering or recovering from abuse.

According to Spokane Regional Health District, almost 25% of violent crime in Spokane over the last five years has been related to domestic violence.

The data also shows that Spokane County residents are more likely to experience domestic violence than the rest of the state.

With such high numbers, SRDVC's is committed to reaching those in the community in need of help.

Hunter said it's important to recognize the common signs of domestic violence, whether it be verbal, financial or other kids of abuse.

"I think the most important one is when a survivor says, 'I'm a survivor,' you believe them, regardless of how outlandish or crazy their story may sound, regardless of it you know their abuser, believe them," she said.
