Spokane City Council votes to add 10-year expiration term to Proposition 1

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane City Council voted on Monday night to add a sunset provision to the November ballot's proposition 1.

Proposition 1 proposes a one-tenth of a percent tax increase on Spokane's sales and use tax for community safety.

It would cost tax payers about $1 for every $1,000 spent and excludes necessities such as food, prescriptions and rent.

Before Monday's vote, the proposition included no time limit for the tax increase.

The sunset provision will make it so the tax, if passed, will expire after 10 years.

The ordinance passed 5-2, with councilmembers Cathcart and Bingle voting against.

Cathcart cited his reason as being a lack of specifics as to how the money from the proposed tax would be used.
