80 years later: Fort Carson honors D-Day with ceremony

(FORT CARSON, Colo.) — Fort Carson Army Post and the 4th Infantry Division will commemorate the contributions of the soldiers who served during World War II on the 80th Anniversary of D-Day with a ceremony at Manhart Field on Thursday, June 6. The ceremony is open to all service members, families, and civilians.

The 4th Infantry Division was one of the leading Allied forces that landed at Utah Beach on June 6, 1944. From there, they pushed into France and liberated Paris before moving into Luxembourg, where 4th ID Soldiers became the first U.S. Soldiers to breach the Siegfried Line and enter Germany.

The soldiers then moved north to face the Germans in the bloody Hurtgen Forest, and after weeks of brutal combat, returned to Luxembourg for action in the Battle of the Bulge, halting the enemy advance in December.

The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. and will feature re-enlistments and a demonstration of modern-day maneuvers.
