(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — Governor Jared Polis visited several locations in Pueblo and Chaffee Counties on Friday, Aug. 9, to launch new housing opportunities, discuss Colorado’s wildfire mitigation efforts, and join a ribbon cutting for the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Pueblo.

In Buena Vista, Gov. Polis cut the ribbon for the new Department of Corrections workforce housing units, which include 12 fully furnished two and three-bedroom units. The units were a collaborative effort between Fading West Development and the Colorado Department of Corrections to provide much-needed accessible housing for correctional professionals in Buena Vista.

“These new units will provide needed housing to help attract and retain talent for the Department of Corrections and support the Buena Vista community,” said Governor Polis.

The governor then visited the Midland Apartments in Buena Vista, which are expected to open in 2025 and will provide 60 units of low-cost housing, as well as an early childcare center. “Here in Colorado we are taking major steps to create more housing that Coloradans can afford, and this effort in Buena Vista is a great example of what we are seeing more and more of across the state,” said Polis.

Gov. Jared Polis visited Colorado Firecamp, a recipient of a Forest Restoration and Wildfire Risk Mitigation grant. The camp trains wildland firefighters and forest management crews to enhance Colorado’s wildfire response and mitigation efforts.

Polis’s last stop was the ribbon cutting for the 45th anniversary of the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Pueblo, an important catalyst of Pueblo’s and Colorado’s economy.

“There’s just so many great Hispanic entrepreneurs and business owners and of course, many Hispanic-serving businesses, and the Latino Chamber in Pueblo County is a place where they can really come together,” said Polis. “Over 500 members [are] supporting one another and supporting the growth of businesses and good jobs here in Pueblo County and beyond.”
