(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — A very warm day was present across the region as temperatures soared to well above-average levels for the middle of August. Pueblo ended up breaking a record with a high of 102 degrees for the day. The previous record was set back over 50 years ago in 1973.

Other parts of the region also saw some excessive heat, although the record-breaking was left to Pueblo this time around. Colorado Springs and Alamosa came within just a few degrees of breaking their record too.

As we turn our attention to Sunday, August 18, it looks like the heat will remain with more 90s and lower 100s in the forecast. The National Weather Service (NWS) has already issued a heat advisory for portions of El Paso and Pueblo counties.

The heat advisory will be in place for all areas shaded in maroon (above) on Sunday from noon until 7 PM. Limiting time outside and drinking plenty of water is key for battling these levels of heat. The NWS also recommends seeking shade as often as possible if you have to be outside.

Temperatures elsewhere across the viewing area will also be sizzling hot – especially in the Eastern Plains. The Arkansas River Valley will likely see temperatures in the lower triple digits for most of the day.

For Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Airshow is expected to continue on Sunday with the heat in place. This time around though, you’ll have to be on the lookout for isolated showers and storms. Some models have precipitation for the area starting as early as lunchtime.

Recent data shows isolated to scattered showers and storms for much of the I-25 corridor and higher terrain. Severe weather is expected to be limited, however, with gusty winds, lightning, and small hail as the main threats.

If you’re eager for better rain chances, then you’re in luck. A better push of monsoonal moisture will arrive for the week bringing rain and storm chances each day.
