DENVER ( KDVR ) — Colorado State Patrol’s newest team member is trained in detecting explosives, but he walks on four legs instead of two.

Gunner, the 18-month-old canine, is the latest addition to CSP’s executive security branch, according to an announcement on Tuesday. He can detect explosives, firearms and shell casings and will be working at the Colorado State Capitol. When needed, Gunner will also work around the state and assist in security and investigations.

This specialty pup will join Scout, a veteran canine who’s been with CSP since July 2021. According to the agency, Gunner is the third explosive detection dog to work with CSP.

“A detection dog’s main mission is to protect human life. Ensuring the highest levels of security for visitors and employees at and around the Capitol is of the utmost concern for our troopers and security personnel,” said Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, in a release.  “These working dogs are incredibly skillful and obedient, providing us with a unique resource to protect a peaceful event or environment.”

Before joining CSP, Gunner was required to pass the canine version of a background check to ensure he could be trained and would be healthy to work for years to come.

Aside from working at the Capitol, you can catch Gunner playing with his favorite toy, a red squeaky ball, or chowing down on his favorite treat, cheese.
