(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — The Cañon City Police Department (CCPD) is asking neighbors to check their security cameras after a suspect allegedly shot into a locked car on Sunday, Sept. 1 to steal a gun that was left unsecured inside.

CCPD posted about the incident on Facebook and said officers were flagged down on Sunday in the early morning hours in the 1300 block of Woodlawn Avenue, near Cañon City High School, on reports of shots fired in the area.

Through their investigation, officers learned that a suspect was seen on video looking into cars and that the suspect had fired at least one shot into a locked car in order to get to a gun that was left inside. CCPD said the gun was stolen and the suspect ran north on Yale Place before officers arrived.

CCPD is now asking anyone nearby the scene to check their doorbell and security cameras for any footage that might have captured the suspect. If you find any footage that may be helpful to the investigation, CCPD asks that you call them at (719) 276-5600 and report it.

CCPD also took the opportunity to remind community members to secure their weapons.

“Colorado law now requires that firearms stored in vehicles must be secured in a locked container,” CCPD said. “It is always preferred that you remove firearms and other valuable items from your vehicle when you are leaving the vehicle unattended for any period of time.”

CCPD also reminds the community never to approach a suspect if you see them committing a crime like this one, as the suspect may be armed. Instead, if you see something suspicious, CCPD urges that you contact law enforcement immediately.
