Clean-up of homeless camps along Fountain Creek underway in Pueblo

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The City of Pueblo along with BNSF Railroad will be working on a clean-up effort along Fountain Creek through Thursday, Sept. 5.

Pueblo Mayor Heather Graham posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Aug. 28 that she had walked with the Directed Investigation and Community Engagement Unit, also known as the D.I.C.E. Unit of the Pueblo Police Department ahead of the cleanup, which began on Tuesday, Sept. 3. In the post, Mayor Graham also addressed some community concerns.

“I know we have heard from many concerned citizens about the hundred of people “I” am going to be displacing,” wrote Mayor Graham. “What I can assure you of, after my walk [on Aug. 28] from 8th Street to 4th Street bridges, I came across less than five individuals who were camped out there.”

Mayor Graham continued her statement by writing that people had already begun to pick up their belongings and move.

“The trash that has been left from the illegal dumping and camping, is what we are cleaning up,” wrote Mayor Graham. “The community wants to have safe waterways, trails, and a cleaned-up City. That’s what I intend to do.”

The City tells FOX21 the clean-up will include railroad property which is 150 feet from the center of the tracks on both sides and City of Pueblo property.
