(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The 310th Space Wing hosted what may potentially be the last Change of Command Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 8th, at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The ceremony took place at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Sunday afternoon with a picnic for service members and their families to celebrate Col. Adam Fisher who will assume command of the wing, which is the only Air Force reserve unit conducting space operations.
“We also combined this event with a picnic where… the members, men and women of the 310 Space Wing, and their families are here enjoying a camaraderie. [It’s] a way to say thanks for their service and what they do for this nation every day that they wear this uniform,” added Col. Fischer.
The 310th Space Wing will cease space operations and be inactivated in the next few years as part of the Space Force Personnel Management Act also known as PMA.
The PMA was passed and signed into law in December 2023, to establish a new service model that offers full and part-time service opportunities under a single component instead of active-duty and reserve components. This is similar to the transition active duty Air Force underwent in 2020.
“It’s it’s truly amazing. It really is. And it’s really a testament to the sacrifices the men and women, both in uniform, and their family members make in the day-to-day,” said Col. Fischer.
The PMA intends to create a new service model that rather than having active-duty and reserve components now gives full-time and part-time service opportunities under a single component. The 310th Space Wing has approximately 1,400 personnel and is headquartered at Shriever Space Force Base, they also have units assigned to Peterson, Buckley, and another in California.
The Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Space Command, and U.S. Space Force are just a few of the government agencies that the wing supports.
The new commander says anyone interested in joining should reach out to their local Air Force, Space Force, or Army recruiter for more information.
“To be a member of the 310 space wing or a member of the Space Force and a member of the Air Force Reserve, it really just takes a willingness to step out there, and put yourself out there, and feel that you need to defend this nation. You feel a calling to defend this nation, and then just keep doing good work,” added Col. Fischer.
Until November 30th, members of the military reserve forces in wing-related career fields can submit an application to serve full-time in the U.S. Space Force.
