Local hikes Manitou Incline every day in Sept. for a cause

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A local Colorado Springs community member is set to accomplish his own challenge of climbing the Manitou Incline every single day for a good cause.

Leo Nunes set off to climb the Incline every day for 30 days to raise $60,000 for ZERO Prostate Cancer, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting prostate cancer. Nunes was diagnosed two years ago at 49 years old, he was blindsided by the diagnosis, as he had no symptoms.

He discovered the diagnosis through a routine Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test. A statement said the diagnosis changed Nunes’ life and opened his eyes to the critical importance of early detection. Now, he’s turning his battle into a mission to help others.

“The struggle to find support and resources after my diagnosis was almost as challenging as facing the disease itself,” says Nunes. “Now, I’m turning that experience into action.”

The Incline — a hike of over 2,000 feet — was recently ranked the second most challenging tourist attraction. By the end of the month, Nunes will have climbed 60,000 feet in the name of raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer research, support, and education.

Nunes’ goal is to receive 2,000 donations of at least $30, one for every foot of elevation gained over the month.

Donations will support ZERO Prostate Cancer, an organization working to end the stigma, barriers, and deaths associated with the disease. Nunes’ climb hopes to amplify the message about the importance of PSA screenings and early detection. He hopes his journey can inspire men to prioritize their health and seek regular screenings, as early detection can be life-saving.

“Every two minutes, a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer in America. Every 15 minutes, a man loses his life to this disease,” Nunes said. “Your support is greatly needed and appreciated. Together, we can work toward a future with zero stigma, zero barriers, and zero deaths from prostate cancer.”

Individuals can donate online . As of Tuesday, Sept. 17, there are still 29 days left to donate.

“Join me in this uphill battle,” Nunes urges. “Together, we can make every step count and help men facing prostate cancer find the resources and hope they need. Let’s reach new heights in the fight against prostate cancer.”
