(COLORADO) — The U.S. Department of Education announced its 2024 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Award Schools with four Colorado schools selected out of 356 schools across the country.

Colorado’s 2024 Blue Ribbon Schools are:

    • DSST Cedar High School in Denver Public Schools.
    • Zach Elementary School in Poudre School District.
    • Mesa View Elementary in Mesa County Vallet School District 51.
    • Skyview Middle School in Pueblo County School District 70.

DSST Cedar High School and Zach Elementary School were recognized as high-performing schools, meaning they are amongst the top performers in their state as measured by nationally normed tests and state assessments.

Mesa View Elementary and Sky View Middle were recognized as exemplary achievement gap-closing schools — which means they are excelling in narrowing achievement gaps between student groups and student body.

“We are incredibly proud of the diligent work of the educators and staff at each of these schools to improve academic outcomes for all students,” said Board Chair Rebecca McClellan on behalf of the State Board of Education. “The Blue Ribbon designation is well-deserved recognition of those efforts.”

All four schools will receive National Blue Ribbon banners designating them as national models for excellence in teaching and learning.

Skyview Middle School Principal Wendy James said they are “incredibly honored” to receive the National Blue Ribbon Award.

“This recognition belongs to our entire school community, including our dedicated staff, hardworking students, and supportive families,” said James. “Together, we have created an environment where every student can succeed.”

These awards are national examples and emphasize Colorado’s focus on ensuring all students get a high-quality education.

“This is a high honor — Colorado is a leader in providing a high-quality education that helps students succeed and learn the skills needed to thrive,” Governor Jared Polis said. “I am thrilled that four Colorado schools have been recognized with this prestigious award for performance and I look forward to celebrating this achievement, sharing the magic of what works, and helping even more Colorado schools excel.”

The Colorado schools will join other awardees at the National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony later this year, where they will receive their official award and be celebrated for their contributions to education.

Sad for Colorado. 356 awards given between 50 States and Colorado proud of 4? There's nothing to brag about. We need to do better, especially if we do the math and still think that's good!
