Cañon City hosts community meeting to address crime

(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — The community in Cañon City gathered on Thursday, Oct. 3 to address an increase in crime in the city and to discuss possible solutions.

The meeting was held at the Steeple Event Center, where community members created a list of crimes they have seen spike in recent months, including a suspect who had allegedly vandalized over 20 businesses and a suspect who fell asleep inside an elderly neighbor’s home.

The community also voiced frustration over people who were allegedly being released after multiple arrests and releases, only to commit more crimes.

“Most of us don’t stay open after dark, because it’s not safe,” said Debbie Lake, the Owner of Cañon City business Classic Furniture. “And, you know, if you wonder why everybody’s business is not open, well, we’ve had run-ins. You know, we’ve had people come in and threaten us, we’ve had issues downtown. And we’ve spoken to the police, we’ve… talked with Chief Schick, and they’re very aware of it, but I’m with all of you that we need solutions here, we need to know where we can go and all of us help each other out as a community.”

Representatives from the Cañon City Police Department were in attendance at the meeting.
