(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released the identity of a man who was shot and killed on Saturday, Oct. 5, near a youth football game being held at Atlas Preparatory School.

According to CSPD, officers originally responded shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Saturday to the parking lot of Atlas Prep, near the intersection of South Murray Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard, on a report of a shooting.

The shooting occurred while a youth football game was being held at the school, however CSPD has confirmed that the shooting was not believed to be related to the football game or the school that was hosting.

CSPD said initial reports were that two men were involved in a verbal fight in the parking lot, and during the fight, one of them pulled a gun and fired, hitting the other man at least once. When officers arrived, they found a man dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

On Monday, Oct. 7, the El Paso County Coroner identified the victim as 29-year-old Donte Maurice Rice.
