(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A man was arrested south of Downtown Colorado Springs on Wednesday, Oct. 9 for threatening people with a baseball bat, making racially-based threats, and eventually attacking a person with the bat.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers responded just before 2 p.m. to a report of an assault with a baseball bat in the 1000 block of South Nevada Avenue, north of Dorchester Park.

When officers arrived, CSPD said they learned that a man had confronted several people in the area, yelling taunts and threats based on race. The suspect then assaulted another man with the bat before leaving the area. CSPD said the suspect was later found and arrested following a short foot chase.

The suspect, 37-year-old Leonard Brown, was booked into the Criminal Justice Center on charges of Second Degree Assault, Bias Motivated Crime, and Obstructing a Peace Officer.

CSPD did not say whether the person who was attacked with the baseball bat was seriously injured.

While it's probably true he was arrested for making threats, it's more pertinent to note he was arrested for assaulting someone. This is Journalism 101.
