(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado State Patrol (CSP) told FOX21 News the extended closure of I-25 southbound that happened on Monday, Oct. 14 was the result of two crashes that happened near North Gate Boulevard.

At around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, CSP responded to a crash on I-25 involving three vehicles.

CSP said a Ford F150 going southbound was reported to have been driving erratically before hitting a Jeep Wrangler which then hit a guardrail. The Ford continued south before it collided with a guardrail which caused a portion of the rail to enter the interstate. A Toyota RAV4 then hit the rail as the Ford continued to the right side of I-25 before the truck rolled.

CSP said the driver of the Ford, a 69-year-old man from Palmer Lake, was taken to the hospital where he later died. Other drivers involved in the crash reported minor injuries.

CSP is continuing to investigate but no charges have been filed at this time.

Troopers said at around 9:15 p.m. Monday, while in the last stages of cleanup from the earlier crash, a CDOT truck that was blocking lanes of traffic, was hit by a Honda Pilot traveling southbound on I-25. The driver, a 55-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and according to CSP, the CDOT truck was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

Two lanes of southbound I-25 were reopened just before 11 p.m. on Monday night.
