(MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.) — The City of Manitou Springs, in partnership with Galvanize Recycling and Blue Star Recyclers, hosted the annual Recycle Day on Saturday, Oct. 12 and the city said thousands of pounds of recyclable material was diverted from the landfill.

The City said the event held on Saturday featured the participation of about 75 vehicles and 3, 134 pounds of material was collected. The participation is only slightly lower than last year’s but the City said the community’s dedication remained strong.

The City released a breakdown of the materials collected:

    • Batteries : 58 pounds
    • Bulbs : 15 pounds
    • Computers : 221 pounds
    • Displays : 600 pounds
    • Miscellaneous Electronics : 572 pounds

    • Medical Equipment : 25 pounds
    • Textiles : 30 pounds
    • Candles : 10 pounds
    • Outdoor Gear : 227 pounds
    • Cycling Gear : 165 pounds
    • Printer Ink : 5 pounds
    • Eyeglasses : 5 pounds

The total pounds of electronics was 1,466 pounds which removed potential hazardous waste like lead, mercury, and cadmium from potentially leaching into the soil and water.

“The continued participation of Manitou Springs residents in events like this, is a testament to the community’s commitment to sustainability,” said Cassandra Hessel, Public Information Officer for the City of Manitou Springs. “Every item diverted from a landfill contributes to a cleaner and healthier city, and environment overall.”
