Visit These 3 Restaurants In The South Grand Dining District

The South Grand Dining District offs up some of the most diverse restaurants in St. Louis. In this area--which only stretches six blocks--you can find Turkish kebabs, Vietnamese pho, Ethiopian injera and Thai papaya salad. Not to mention you can also find of the city's best vegan and vegetarian fare here such as barbecue jackfruit tacos and New York-style pizza slices made with cashew cheese.

So, here are a few highlights from the South Grand Dining District.

Basil Spice Thai Cuisine

The owner of Basil Spice landed in St. Louis by way of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. At Basil Spice, which she opened in 2008. Basil Spice serves up a menu that features appetizers, soups, curries, stir-fries, fried-rice dishes and several vegetarian offerings. One of the best is the Thai sweet & sour stir fried. It comes with cucumbers, tomatoes, pineapples, bell peppers, and onions in special sweet & sour sauce. served with steamed rice. Then you have your choice of adding chicken, pork, beef, or shrimp.

This restaurant has better Thai food than other restaurants I’ve visited. I’ve even purchased to-go meals at times and it was still delicious. The parking may be difficult during busy hours but it’s worth it. Arock

Cafe Mochi

Cafe Mochi debuted in 2009 and features sushi and Japanese-style dishes. Some popular dishes at Cafe Mochi include the eye-catching volcano sushi roll with tempura shrimp, asparagus and avocado, topped with baked crab, scallops and spicy mayo. The cafe is often busy at Happy hour, which features half-off select sushi rolls and drink specials Tuesday through Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30pm.

I’m a local and love this restaurant. I recommend it-the sushi is always outstanding and I’ve never had a piece that tasted less than fresh. Never sent anything back, the tempura rolls are dynamite in the winter! The pink geisha is something I crave and have not been able to duplicate. Even if you have to wait a bit it’s worth it. Brasilia

If you've ever wanted the taste of Brasil in St. Louis, here's your chance! The Feijoada dish is a must have. It is a traditional Brazilian dish of black beans cooked with sirloin, bacon and sausage. It is also served with rice, sautéed collard greens, "farofa" yucca flour, orange slices and vinaigrette. I'm getting hungry just typing that out.

We are visiting and decided to give this restaurant a try based on the style of cuisine, ratings and reviews. It didn't disappoint. My husband had the combo Brazil. I had the fried grouper, and we shared the mussels and a pitcher of caipirinah. FANTASTIC!!! There was a bit of a wait but thats because everything is prepared to order. Khandy B.
