EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Eight candidates are running for a seat on the El Centro City Council. Three seats are open.

Previously, we highlighted three candidates running for a seat on the council: John Marty Ellett, Bill Caldwell and Claudia Camarena.

On Friday, we are highlighting four additional candidates: El Centro Mayor Sylvia Marroquin, Edgard Garcia, Jason Jackson and Luis Minor.

All the candidates say they are ready to serve the City of El Centro, including Marroquin, who has served on the council since 2022.

"I am seeking reelection because personally, I have some projects that are in the process that I like to see, first of all, come true and also, see them through," Marroquin shared.

Garcia is also currently on the council and is a practicing attorney for 15 years.

"When I ran nine years ago, I ran on a basic platform, which was to increase infrastructure in the city and to bring more businesses over here, and I think we have been successful in the last nine years," Garcia expressed.

Jackson served on the council from 2011 through 2020 and was mayor for the City of El Centro in 2016.

"I spent nine years on the council and four years on the planning committee, and am very familiar with the ins and outs of our city government over the last four years. The city is kind of taking a step backwards. There are some fiscal issues that need to be addressed," Jackson remarked.

Minor is a retired public safety expert who worked for the Sheriff's Office for more than 18 years.

"The reason why I am running for the [El Centro City Council] is because this community has given so much to me and I want to give back by helping it grow and thrive...I've been a member of this community probably for the last two decades now," Minor spoke.

All four candidates send a message to those who will be voting in November.

"This is your opportunity to voice their opinion and to select the candidates that they feel will best represent them and the better good of the City of El Centro."

    Sylvia Marroquin, candidate

"I would like to humbly request your support for November for reelection. I've been on the council for nine years and the work that I’ve done has been very beneficial."

    Edgard Garcia, candidate

"Like I said before, not everybody likes me, not everybody agrees with me, but I think that what I bring to the table is a wellness to sit down with people and discuss the issues and discuss policy and always do what is right."

    Jason Johnson, candidate

"Your vote is your voice. This election is about choosing leaders who will be fully committed to serving our community. I am ready to devote all my time and energy to make El Centro a safer and more prosperous city."

    Luis Minor
