NJ Transit is going on a week-long fare holiday

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — You won’t need a ticket to ride NJ Transit later this month.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday that NJ Transit will take a fare holiday from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2, waiving all rides as a “thank you” to the “hundreds of thousands of loyal customers who depend on public transit,” a statement reads.

“Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one-week fare holiday for NJ Transit riders,” Murphy said in a statement.

Those disruptions, ranging from overhead wire issues to track signal problems, have mostly been along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. NJ Transit’s River Line — the light rail that connects Camden and Trenton — has also been experiencing consistent delays and cancellations .

Murphy and NJ Transit said short-term improvements have been made on the corridor, and repairs and upgrades are being expedited on the River Line. The transit agency is introducing the fare holiday in the meantime, admitting that it “has not consistently met [customers’] expectations — or our own.”

Commuters who already purchased a monthly transit pass will automatically receive a 25% discount for their September pass.
