NEW CASTLE, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware State Police are investigating a deadly crash in New Castle Wednesday night that left a woman and her child dead and several others injured.

It happened around 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of Airport and Christiana roads. A speeding Kia K5 ran a red light and struck a Dodge minivan that was turning left onto Airport Road from the eastbound lanes of Christiana Road.

The minivan’s driver, 29-year-old Karisma Elivo-Stevens, of New Castle, and her 10-year-old daughter, Zamiyah Elivo, were killed. Police said they were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Elivo-Stevens' four other daughters in the minivan were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They range in age from 1 to 8.

Relatives told NBC10 that Elivo-Stevens worked for a food delivery service and had just made her final drop-off of the night when the crash happened.

On Friday, police announced charges against the Kia driver: 26-year-old DeJuan Robinson, of Wilmington. He is charged with two counts of murder, failure to stop at a red light, and related offenses.

About 10 minutes before the deadly crash, Delaware State Police said Robinson was stopped by state troopers but fled the traffic stop. Troopers said they were not pursuing Robinson at the time of the crash.

After hitting the minivan, Robinson careened into a Hyundai Tucson that was about to turn onto Christiana Road from Airport Road. Robinson and the Hyundai driver, a 43-year-old woman from Bear, were both seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

Robinson is currently behind bars on $900,000 cash bail.

Police say the road was closed for about six hours after the crash. Troopers ask anyone with information to contact them at 302-365-8486.
