MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) Elwyn , the Media-based nonprofit that provides education, treatment and support services to children and adults with developmental disabilities, debuted its newest upgrade to its main campus earlier this week.

President and CEO Chuck McLister cut the ribbon on Elwyn’s new Student Transition Center, a facility for post-secondary 18- to 21-year-olds with developmental challenges. The $7.35 million facility will help young adults learn skills for real-world employment and independent living.

“There’s job readiness and training that has a technology component, cashiering, warehouse operations, retail food service,” McLister said. “There’s a cafe where the students can actually do the equivalent of an internship.

“There’s an apartment where independent living activities can be simulated — laundry, cooking, just taking care of yourself.”

The center will welcome its first group of students this fall.

However, the opening of this facility does not mark the end of the campus transformation.

“The next phase is to build a new core school for our primary and secondary students,” McLister added.
