PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It’s back-to-school time again! What’s ahead for the Philadelphia School District and those University of the Arts students who transferred to Temple University last week? And what’s going on with that South Philly ocean liner that needs to find a new home?

Look back, look ahead, and get a better understanding of the stories shaping the Philadelphia region on “The Week in Philly” with Matt Leon and KYW Newsradio’s team of reporters. Listen on KYW Newsradio 103.9 FM Saturdays at 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Episodes are also available as a podcast or, you can check out individual segments below.

    🚍Busing Backlash

A few weeks before the start of the school year, Deptford Township schools announced a plan to eliminate free busing for students who lived within 2 miles of their school, then quickly rescinded that plan due to backlash from the community. The school board met this week and got an earful from parents who are still upset. KYW Newsradio’s Nina Baratti tells us what parents and the school superintendent had to say.

    😳NJ Bridge Break

Earlier this week, the Middle Thorofare Bridge, which connects Wildwood Crest and Cape May, went up to let boats pass… and didn’t come back down . Officials thought it would take weeks to get the broken motor repaired, but it was up and running within a few days. KYW’s South Jersey reporter Mike Dougherty explains the whole saga and how this temporary fix saved many end-of-summer vacations.

    From 🦄 to 🦉

When University of the Arts suddenly closed its doors in June , Temple University was among several Philly-area schools that were quick to open their arms to the displaced students. KYW Newsradio’s Nigel Thompson went to Temple’s move-in day to find out how former UArts students are adjusting.

    ⛴️Time to Set Sail

A historic ocean liner has been sitting at a Philadelphia pier for 30 years. Its fate has been up in the air recently, as the owners of the pier and boat battled over its location. Now, a judge has declared that the SS United States must be moved by Sept. 12 . Where will it go? KYW Newsradio’s John McDevitt gives us the full story.

    💙DNC Unity

It’s been a wild month for the Democratic presidential campaign, but with Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz locked in, the delegates were ready to celebrate at the Democratic National Convention . KYW Newsradio’s Pat Loeb was there. She tells us about the big moments, Pennsylvania’s notable representation, and the limited impact of protests over the war in Gaza.

    🏫Back to school!

As Philadelphia schools prepared for their first day, KYW’s education reporter Mike DeNardo sat down with Superintendent Tony Watlington to find out what his priorities are for the year. He tells us what’s changing and, hopefully, improving for students, teachers, and parents.
