PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philly 10k had its 11th run on Sunday morning. Thousands of runners from near and far taking part in one of the city’s fastest-growing runs were rewarded with some uncommon views of the city.

“I am a nervous wreck,” said Anesha Bonelli. “This is the first race ever that I have ever participated in.”

Bonelli says the run highlights a turning point in her life: “This year, I made a crazy change fitness wise. I was always the kid that was overweight. I was never into fitness or working out. I hated running.”

After training for the past two months, she said, she was looking forward to experiencing the course in a new way.

“I’ve done the course, so it’s going to be lovely to be able to do the course without all the cars.”

The 10k run started at 8th and South streets, wound its way through Queen Village, the Italian Market and other South Philadelphia neighborhoods, and ended at 5th and South streets with a street festival on Bainbridge Street.

“It’s a great run through a different area of the city that you don’t traditionally get to run with some of the other races,” said Jennifer McCracken from Conshohocken.

The race was a good excuse for Barbara Rockenbach to come to the city from Plymouth Meeting.

“I’m just not down in the city all that much anymore, so just really looking forward to seeing the crowds and everyone out there on the course in a different area,” she said.

Rockenbach said she also gets to meet up with some friends and bond with them over a good run. “It’s also great to come down, run with them and grab a beer after.”

Part of the proceeds from the race go to charities in Philly every year. This year’s beneficiary was Friends of FDR Park.
