PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Our bodies have an internal clock that determines our sleep-wake cycle. At different points in our lives, we are programmed to get a certain amount of sleep.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, teenagers need a great deal of sleep, but they tend to go to sleep later in the evening and wake later in the morning. The start of the school year can have a dramatic impact on them.

Mornings are tough for teens and many are clearly not as alert. This puts them at greater risk for auto accidents if they are driving. In fact, any activity that requires concentration can be impacted.

If you have a teenage driver in the house, take time to discuss the importance of staying alert and focused when behind the wheel. A good breakfast can help as well.
