CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Kings Highway, running through Camden County, is getting a facelift, with work being done in three locations. The $10.7 million project is funded by the county.

Work is soon to start in the boroughs of Haddon Heights, Audubon and Mount Ephraim, not only repaving the road, but also making some important infrastructure upgrades, including stormwater and sewer system improvements.

Mount Ephraim Mayor Sue Carney says the towns worked together to save taxpayer money that can be used on other needed projects.

“This is how an effective government is supposed to operate,” Carney said.

Haddon Heights mayor Zach Hauck says Kings Highway’s patchwork of concrete and asphalt doesn’t make for the prettiest drive, but that will soon be in the rear-view mirror. He says the impending work will give the highway the appearance its name demands.

“I don’t want to say you judge a book by its cover, but I do believe people get an impression about our community from the feeling they get driving on our roads,” Hauck said.

And he says the fresh pavement will be good for business when it’s done.

Parking will also be added in some places. One site is outside Brooklyn Pizza.

“Overall it’s gonna create a better environment,” said Brooklyn Pizza owner Filippo Sparacio. “The street is going to be nicer. The people driving by are going to get a better experience, and just overall it’s going to be better for business.”

Sparacio expects some hiccups with construction but, he said, local businesses are looking forward to working with officials to mitigate disruptions. Sparacio says he’s excited to see the finished product.

“During construction — just like anything else — not everything is perfect, but it’s going to be a beautiful thing in the long run. It’s gonna be a beautiful thing for the neighborhood.”

The work should take about a year to complete.
